Set up the room before you start
Thirty seconds here saves the whole session.
Clear a turning circle. You will rotate more than you expect, and you will not be looking at the floor. Move the coffee table.
Turn the lights on. Camera tracking needs visible detail. Dim rooms are the main cause of drones drifting through walls.
Pan slowly first. Sweep the phone gently across furniture and textured surfaces for twenty seconds before the action starts. This lets the game map your space properly. Skipping it is the most common reason early rounds feel unstable.
Pick a corner or a wall to back toward. Standing in the middle of a room means threats can come from all 360 degrees. With a wall behind you, that halves.
Stance and grip
Hold the phone with both hands, elbows tucked in rather than extended. Arms held out straight fatigue within a minute and shake, which makes aiming worse.
Turn with your feet, not your wrists. This is the single biggest technique improvement available. Pivoting your whole body keeps the phone steady relative to your head and produces smooth, trackable motion. Swinging just your arms creates fast, blurry camera movement — exactly what breaks tracking.
Keep the phone at chest-to-chin height rather than fully overhead. You will need to look up, but craning constantly is what ends sessions early.
Finding threats before they find you
The core skill in AR is not aim. It is knowing where you have not looked recently.
Adopt a scan pattern instead of reacting. Sweep in a consistent direction — say, always clockwise — so you cover the full arc systematically rather than snapping back and forth to whatever last made a noise. Random reactive turning leaves blind spots that stay unchecked for long stretches.
Use audio. Sound cues tell you direction before anything is on screen, and in AR that is more valuable than in a conventional game because your field of view is a narrow window rather than a wide monitor. Headphones genuinely help.
Check above you deliberately. Drones occupy vertical space, and the ceiling is the area players neglect most. Build an upward glance into your scan.
Tracking a moving target
Lead your shots. Drones move continuously. Aiming where one currently is means hitting where it was. Aim slightly ahead of its travel.
Track smoothly rather than snapping. Follow a target's motion with a steady pan and fire during the follow. Jerking the phone onto a target overshoots and blurs the camera.
Prioritise by distance, not by threat display. The nearest drone is the one about to reach you. Clearing it buys the most time, even if something further away looks more dangerous.
Do not chase. If a drone circles behind you, turning to follow it means turning your back on everything else. Reposition instead so the swarm stays in one arc.
Recovering when tracking slips
It will happen — someone walks past, you turn too fast, you point at a blank wall. Do not keep playing through it.
Lower the phone slightly, point it at a textured part of the room, and pan slowly for a few seconds. The game re-anchors and the scene settles. Five seconds of this is faster than fighting a drifting world for a whole round.
Managing the physical side
Play in short bursts. Your arms tire before your attention does, and tired arms shake, which degrades everything above. Two or three rounds then a break beats one long grind.
Watch for the phone getting warm. Sustained AR heats the device, and once iOS throttles performance tracking becomes visibly less responsive. Taking the case off helps for longer sessions.
