Your field of view is genuinely small
A monitor or TV shows a wide virtual field of view — often 90 degrees or more of the game world, artificially widened so you can see peripherally without turning.
An AR phone shows you what the camera sees, which is roughly what the lens covers, displayed on a rectangle held at arm's length. Functionally you are looking through a letterbox. You have no peripheral vision of the game world at all.
This is the defining constraint of first-person AR, and it cuts both ways. It makes threats genuinely harder to locate, which is a legitimate source of tension. It also means any game demanding rapid awareness of many simultaneous threats becomes unfair rather than challenging.
Presence comes free, immersion does not
Conventional games work hard to convince you that you are somewhere. AR skips that entirely — you already believe in the room, because you are standing in it. A virtual object placed convincingly in your actual space produces a reaction no rendered scene reproduces.
But that presence is fragile in a specific way. Because the real world is the reference, any inconsistency is immediately obvious. An object that floats slightly, clips through your table, or fails to be occluded by your sofa breaks the effect instantly. In a fully virtual scene you would never notice, because there is no ground truth to compare against.
This is why AR games tend toward flying enemies and stylised visuals rather than photoreal ground-based ones. Something clearly artificial hovering in your room reads as intentional; something almost-real standing on your carpet reads as broken.
Movement, and why the classic scheme is gone
First-person games conventionally split control: one stick moves, one stick looks. AR removes both. Looking is done by physically turning. Moving is done by physically walking — which in a living room means barely at all.
So first-person AR is effectively a game about rotation and aim from a fixed position. That is closer to a light-gun arcade cabinet than to a modern shooter, and the games that work embrace it rather than trying to bolt virtual movement onto a physical camera. Virtual movement in AR also tends to produce discomfort, because your body reports standing still while the view says otherwise.
Vertical space is the opportunity
Conventional level design is overwhelmingly horizontal, because moving upward is awkward with a thumbstick and most players never look up.
AR inverts that. Looking up is a natural physical action, the space above you is unobstructed by furniture, and it requires no floor area. It is also the area AR tracks most forgivingly, since a slight positional error in open air is invisible whereas the same error on a tabletop is glaring.
That is why airborne threats have become the default in AR action games. It is not a theme choice — it is the design landing where the medium actually works.
Pacing around the body
The player is holding a device up and turning. That is exercise, and it sets a hard ceiling on session length no amount of good design removes.
Well-paced AR action gives you complete experiences in two to five minutes, with natural pauses where you can lower your arms. Games structured as long continuous campaigns fight the medium and lose — not because players are uninterested, but because their shoulders are.
