Augmented Reality Shooter Games You Can Play at Home

"AR shooter" describes at least four quite different things, built on different technology and asking different things of the player. Knowing which kind you are looking at explains most of what you will experience.

Location-based

Uses GPS to place gameplay across a real geographic area. You walk to actual places and encounter content there. AR is often the presentation layer rather than the core mechanic — the camera view is where an encounter happens, but the game is fundamentally about a map.

Demands: going outside, mobile data, and time. Strengths: genuine scale and a natural reason to keep returning. Weaknesses: weather, safety, and the fact that gameplay depends on where you happen to live.

Tabletop

Anchors a small scene to a flat surface — a table, a floor, a desk — and you look into it from outside, like a diorama. You move around the table rather than existing inside the scene.

Demands: a clear flat surface, and a willingness to lean and circle. Strengths: reliable tracking, since a textured tabletop is an easy target, and it works in very little space. Weaknesses: low immersion — you are an observer rather than a participant, so shooters in this style feel closer to strategy games.

Room-scale first-person

Places the action in the volume around you and treats you as being inside it. Threats approach your actual position, and you turn to face them. This is where AR feels least like a novelty and most like a game.

Demands: a lit room with some furniture, space to turn, and arms that tolerate holding a phone up. Strengths: the strongest sense of presence available on a phone. Weaknesses: physical fatigue caps session length, and a narrow camera field of view makes threat-tracking genuinely difficult.

Flying enemies dominate this category for sound reasons — they can approach through the open air above your furniture, so you never need to walk, and small tracking errors are invisible in mid-air.

Passthrough on a headset

Headsets showing camera passthrough create AR without the phone. Your hands are free, the field of view is far wider, and there is no arm fatigue from holding a device.

Demands: expensive hardware, cleared space, and willingness to wear something on your face. Strengths: comfortably the best AR experience technically. Weaknesses: a tiny installed base compared with phones, which is why almost all AR shooters remain phone-based.

How the technology differs underneath

Location-based games lean on GPS and are limited by its accuracy — typically several metres, which is why they rarely require precise positioning. The other three rely on visual-inertial odometry: camera frames fused with motion sensors to work out where the device is, many times a second.

That difference explains a lot. GPS games work outdoors and struggle indoors. Odometry games work indoors and struggle with blank walls, dim light, and fast movement, because they need visible detail to lock onto.

What all AR shooters share

Regardless of subgenre, four constraints are universal:

  • Short sessions. Holding a device up, or wearing one, is physically taxing. This is not a design failure to be fixed.
  • Battery and heat. Camera capture plus scene understanding plus rendering is among the heaviest sustained loads on any device.
  • Tracking degrades. Bad lighting and featureless surfaces break every camera-based system.
  • Your space is the level. Which means no two players have the same experience, and designers cannot rely on layout.

Which to try first

If you want scale and a reason to walk: location-based. If you have almost no space or want something you can play at a desk: tabletop. If you want the thing AR does that nothing else can — something in your actual room, reacting to where you stand: room-scale first-person, and that is the category most worth trying first.
