Aiming becomes physical, and that changes everything
On a console you aim with a thumbstick — precise, repeatable, and tiring only for your thumb. In AR you aim by pointing the phone, which means your accuracy is limited by how steadily you can hold a device at arm's length while turning.
Well-designed AR shooters account for this. Targets are larger than they would be on a screen. Hit detection is more forgiving. Precision is rarely the challenge — awareness is, because the difficulty comes from finding threats rather than landing pixel-perfect shots.
Games that ignore this feel broken. Small, fast targets requiring exact aim are miserable to hit when your reticle is attached to your hands.
Movement is the hardest problem
A conventional shooter assumes you can traverse a large map. An AR shooter has to assume you are standing in a room with furniture in it.
The solutions that work in practice:
- Rotation as the primary input. You turn to face threats rather than walking to them. Costs no floor space and uses the one movement AR tracks reliably.
- Threats that come to you. If enemies approach, you do not need to advance. This is why flying enemies suit AR so well — they can close distance through empty air above your furniture.
- Vertical space. The volume above you is unobstructed and unused by conventional level design. Looking up is a genuinely novel action.
Games that ask you to physically walk any distance mostly go unplayed, because most people are in a living room and not a warehouse.
Cover, and what replaces it
Conventional shooters are built around cover. AR cannot rely on it — the game does not reliably know that your sofa blocks line of sight, and in a bare room there is nothing to hide behind anyway.
What substitutes is angle management: reducing how many directions you must watch. Backing toward a wall halves the arc you defend. That is a real tactical decision using the actual room, and it is the closest AR equivalent to taking cover.
The constraint nobody designs around often enough
Holding a phone at eye level and turning repeatedly is physically tiring within minutes. Your arms fatigue long before your attention does.
This makes AR a short-session medium, and it is not a limitation you can engineer away. Games built for hour-long sittings will not be played that way. The ones that work treat two to five minutes as a complete unit — a round with a beginning and an end, not a fragment of a longer campaign.
Battery reinforces it. Camera capture plus scene understanding plus 3D rendering is among the heaviest sustained loads a phone handles, and it warms the device quickly.
Graceful failure separates good from bad
Tracking will fail. Someone walks past, you turn too fast, you point at a blank white wall and the camera loses its reference points. This is unavoidable.
The difference is what happens next. A well-built AR shooter absorbs it — the scene holds roughly where it was and re-anchors when features return. A poorly built one dumps you to a menu or scatters enemies through the floor. Recovery behaviour is the single clearest quality signal in this genre.
What to look for before buying
Check the screenshots for a live camera feed rather than a rendered background — some "AR" games are conventional games with a camera image behind them. Check whether the description mentions room-scale or requires open space. And check the session length implied by the design: an AR game promising a hundred-hour campaign is either not really AR or has not thought about your arms.
