FPV Drone Games vs AR Drone Games

FPV and AR sound like neighbours and are closer to opposites. One puts you inside the drone, looking out through its camera. The other puts the drone inside your room, looking at you. Here is which you actually want.

The one-line difference

FPV means first-person view — you see what the drone’s camera sees, as if you were sitting in it. You are the pilot, the drone is your body, and the skill is flying.

AR means augmented reality — the drone is rendered into your real surroundings through your phone’s camera. You are yourself, standing in your own room, and the drone is the thing coming at you. The skill is tracking and reacting.

They point the camera in opposite directions, and almost nobody wants both.

What FPV is really for

FPV grew out of drone racing and freestyle flying, and the software follows the hobby. An FPV simulator is a practice rig: it models throttle, pitch, roll and yaw closely enough that muscle memory built in the app transfers to real hardware. Pilots use them in bad weather, in winter, and before attempting something expensive.

The hardest thing it teaches is orientation. When the drone is flying toward you, left and right invert, and recovering from that instinctively is the difference between landing and replacing a frame. A simulator lets you crash a few hundred times at no cost, which is exactly the point.

What it is not is a game. There is no threat, no objective beyond flying well, and no progression in the way games use the word. If you have no intention of ever flying real hardware, most people find an FPV sim runs out of interest quickly.

What AR is really for

AR has the opposite ambition: not to simulate being somewhere else, but to change where you already are. The camera and motion sensors build an understanding of your actual space, and objects are anchored into it.

The test of whether that is working is simple. Turn away from a drone, then turn back. If it is still where it was, it was placed in your room. If it moved with you, it was drawn on your screen and the “AR” was a camera background.

In Down The Drone the enemies hold their positions in your space, so you have to physically turn to track the swarm, and the geometry of the room you happen to be in becomes the level. That is the whole appeal, and it is a thing FPV cannot do by definition — in FPV you have left the room entirely.

Which should you install?

Get an FPV simulator if you own a drone, are saving for one, or are curious about flying as a hobby. It is the cheapest flight time you will ever buy, and the orientation practice alone justifies it.

Get an AR game if you have no interest in piloting anything and want the thing a phone can do that a console cannot — a threat in your actual space that you have to physically turn to face. Sessions are short by nature, which suits a coffee break better than an evening.

If you genuinely cannot decide, the deciding question is not about drones at all: do you want to sit down or stand up? FPV is a seated activity. AR is not.

A note on hardware requirements

FPV simulators are undemanding and run on old phones. AR is the opposite: ARKit needs an A9 chip or later — iPhone 6s onwards, and Down The Drone needs iOS 13 or later on top of that. If you are on older hardware, the FPV route is open to you and the AR route is not, and no app can work around it.
