Where DoubleTake is the better choice
It runs on iPad, and Lookout does not. If your workflow is iPad-centred this decides it on its own, and no other row matters.
It has pedigree. DoubleTake came out of Filmic, whose Filmic Pro was for years the serious mobile-video app, and it carries controls and encoding options aimed at that audience. It also has years of reviews behind it — a real signal when you are trusting an app with a shoot you cannot repeat.
It publishes its ceiling. DoubleTake documents 1080p multicam at defined frame rates. Lookout does not publish a figure, and an unpublished number is worth less to you than a documented one, even if it turns out to be higher.
Where Lookout is the better choice
There is no subscription. Lookout is free, with no in-app purchases listed. DoubleTake is a free download that sells recurring tiers. For occasional use, paying weekly or yearly for a camera app is a poor trade.
It runs on the Mac. Same app, desktop screen, no export step to review at size. DoubleTake is iOS-family only.
Offline is stated, not assumed. Lookout's listing says it works without an internet connection and collects zero data. DoubleTake's listing does not address either way, so you would have to test it yourself — which is worth doing before a shoot regardless of which you pick.
How to decide in two minutes
Both are free to install, so install both. Put your phone in airplane mode, record thirty seconds in each, and play it back. That single test answers the offline question, the usability question and the "does it actually work on my device" question faster than any comparison page can — including this one.
