First, check your device supports it
Simultaneous front-and-rear capture requires an A12 Bionic chip or newer, which means iPhone XS and later. This is a hardware constraint, not an app limitation — the underlying multi-camera capture API does not exist on older silicon, so no app can offer it there.
On unsupported devices you can still record either camera, just not both at once.
The steps
- Install a dual-camera app. The stock Camera app does not do simultaneous capture. You need something built for it.
- Grant camera and microphone access. Both, on first launch. Denying the microphone gives you silent video, which is easy to do accidentally and annoying to discover afterwards.
- Choose your layout before recording. Picture-in-picture or split screen, and which camera is dominant. Decide now — changing a baked composite later means re-editing rather than re-arranging.
- Set resolution deliberately. Two streams means roughly double the data. Pick the lowest setting that survives your delivery format rather than the highest available.
- Frame both angles. Check the live preview for both. The rear camera usually carries the scene, the front carries you.
- Do a ten-second test. Record, stop, play it back. Check audio, check framing, check both angles are actually there. This catches almost everything.
- Record the real take.
The problems that end takes
The device gets hot. Two sensors, two encoders, and a live preview is close to the heaviest sustained load a phone camera system handles. Long takes warm the device, and once iOS throttles to protect the hardware, recording can stop. Record in segments rather than one continuous hour, keep it out of direct sun, and take the case off for long sessions.
Storage runs out mid-take. Two streams fills space fast. Check free space before you start and assume roughly double a single-camera shoot.
Switching apps stops the recording. iOS gives camera access to the foreground app. Answering a message mid-take can end the recording. Enable Do Not Disturb and leave the phone alone.
Backlighting ruins one angle. The two cameras face opposite directions, so they are almost always in different light. A well-exposed rear shot frequently means a silhouetted front shot. Position yourself so neither camera is pointed at a bright window.
Getting decent audio
Both cameras share the phone's microphones, so you get one audio track for two angles. Position the phone for whichever sound source matters most — usually the person speaking.
If audio is important, record it separately on another device and sync in editing. A clap at the start of the take gives you an obvious waveform spike to align to. This is the single biggest quality upgrade available for interview or dialogue work.
Framing that works
Put the phone on something. Handheld dual-camera footage is shakier than single-camera because you are trying to frame two things at once. Any stable surface at roughly chest height beats holding it.
Leave headroom in the front camera — the selfie lens is wide, and standing close distorts faces. Being slightly further back looks considerably better.
Check what is behind you. The front camera sees your background, and you are not looking at it while you talk.
After the take
Review immediately, while you can still redo it. Check both angles for the whole duration, not just the start. Then move the files off the phone — dual-camera footage accumulates quickly, and a full device is a bad discovery on the next shoot.
