Welltory Alternatives for iPhone: Six Options, by What You Actually Want
Nobody looks for a Welltory alternative because Welltory is bad. They look because one specific thing about it does not fit: the subscription, the learning curve, or the fact that it infers what stressed you rather than telling you. Each of those has a different answer.
Disclosure: 70 BPM is our own app. It is one of the six below, its limitations are listed alongside everyone else’s, and for most of the reasons people leave Welltory it is not the right answer. If you have not decided whether to leave yet, the Welltory app review covers what it does well.
Why people look for a Welltory alternative
Welltory is the most established heart-rate-variability app on iOS — 4.7 stars from more than 132,000 ratings, free to download with a subscription for the full analysis, iOS 16 or later on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The reasons to leave come down to four:
- The subscription. The download is free; the analysis you installed it for largely is not.
- The learning curve. HRV is a technical signal and Welltory surfaces it properly. People who wanted a glanceable answer often bounce.
- Context is inferred, not read. Welltory correlates stress against activities, including meetings, but it does not read your calendar. It can tell you a stressful pattern exists without naming the event.
- It is a platform, not a utility. If you want one specific answer, you are adopting a whole system to get it.
1. Elite HRV — the free Welltory alternative for HRV
Free, 4.7 stars from nearly 6,900 ratings, iOS 13 or later — the widest device support here. States Apple Health integration explicitly alongside Training Peaks, Strava and others. Best for: people who want to keep tracking HRV without a subscription. Limitation: it assumes you want to learn what the numbers mean, so it does not fix the learning curve, and there is no Apple Watch app.
2. Athlytic — a simpler score
Free with a subscription, 4.8 stars from nearly 11,000 ratings, iOS 17 or later. Converts Apple Watch data into a daily recovery and strain score. Best for: people who found Welltory’s depth overwhelming and want one number each morning. Limitation: still a subscription, the score hides its reasoning, and if you are not training regularly it has little to work with.
3. HeartWatch — pay once, track for years
$8.99 once, 4.7 stars from over 13,600 ratings, iOS 11 or later. Tracks heart rate across waking, sleeping and workout states, with a Watch app. Best for: long-term heart rate tracking with no recurring cost. Limitation: heart-rate first rather than an HRV analysis platform, and no iPad app.
4. HRV4Training — controlled morning readings, paid once
$9.99 once, 3.6 stars from 288 ratings, iOS 15.6 or later. Active camera measurement, no subscription. Best for: people who want consistent morning readings taken the same way every day. Limitation: its App Store listing does not mention Apple Health, so check that before buying if you want your Watch history read passively. Lowest rating here, and no Apple Watch app.
5. StressFace — stress score per calendar event
4.3 stars from 223 ratings, iOS 17 or later, actively maintained. Its listing says you can connect your calendar and see how meetings and events affect your stress level. Best for: people who like Welltory’s stress scoring but want it tied to real calendar events. Limitation: calendar sync is a paid Premium feature, and the output is an HRV-derived score per event rather than the heart-rate trace itself.
6. 70 BPM — the cause named, not inferred
Free, no subscription, iOS 18, iPhone only. Reads the heart-rate history Apple Health already holds and draws it against your actual calendar events, so an elevated stretch arrives labelled with the meeting it happened during. Nothing leaves the device — no account, no upload. Best for: people whose real question was “which part of my week is doing this?” Limitations: it does no HRV analysis at all, produces no stress or recovery score, measures nothing itself, and has no Apple Watch app. It is also new, with a handful of ratings. If HRV depth is what you are keeping from Welltory, this is not a replacement — plenty of people would reasonably use both.

Which Welltory alternative, by reason for leaving
- The subscription: Elite HRV (free) or HRV4Training (one-off) for HRV; HeartWatch (one-off) for heart rate.
- Too much to learn: Athlytic.
- Wanted to know which meeting: StressFace for a score per event, or 70 BPM, the free heart rate calendar app, for the trace itself.
- Did not want health data in the cloud: 70 BPM — see heart rate apps that do not upload to the cloud.
- None of the above: stay on Welltory. It is still the deepest option on iOS.
FAQ
What is the best Welltory alternative?
It depends which part of Welltory you want to replace. For free HRV tracking, Elite HRV. For a simpler daily score, Athlytic. For a one-off price instead of a subscription, HeartWatch or HRV4Training. For stress tied to calendar events, StressFace. For heart rate labelled with the meeting it happened in, 70 BPM.
Is there a free alternative to Welltory?
Yes. Elite HRV is free and does not require a subscription to see your own HRV data. 70 BPM is free with no subscription but does not analyse HRV — it shows heart rate against your calendar.
Is there an app like Welltory that reads my calendar?
Welltory itself does not; it infers context from patterns. StressFace connects your calendar and scores stress per event, with calendar sync as a Premium feature. 70 BPM reads the calendars already on your iPhone and draws heart rate against each event, on device.
Can I move my Welltory data to another app?
Most of what matters is not in Welltory to begin with. If your heart rate and HRV come from an Apple Watch, they live in Apple Health, and any app that reads Apple Health — including every alternative above except possibly HRV4Training — sees your full history the moment you grant access.
70 BPM shows the heart rate Apple Health already holds against your calendar. Free, on device, no account.
