Cost to Build an AR App

AR apps cost more than conventional apps, and the difference is not the AR framework itself — ARKit is free and well documented. The cost lives in 3D content, testing against unpredictable real-world conditions, and design problems that do not exist on a flat screen.

Why AR costs more than a standard app

Rough scale relative to a standard app

TypeExampleRelative to equivalent standard app
Simple AR viewerPlace a supplied 3D model on a surface1.3–1.6×
AR product try-onCatalogue of models, sizing, capture and share1.8–2.5×
AR gameCustom content, mechanics, progression2–4×
Industrial / measurement ARAccuracy requirements, LiDAR, data capture2.5–4×

If 3D models already exist and are game-ready, cost drops significantly. If they must be created, modelled, and optimised, that becomes a major part of the budget.

The 3D content question

This decides more of the budget than any other single factor, and it is often overlooked at brief stage.

Do you already have 3D models? CAD models from manufacturing are common but usually unsuitable — they are far too detailed to render in real time and need substantial optimisation.

How many do you need? One hero object is a small line item. A catalogue of two hundred products is a content pipeline and probably the largest cost in the project.

Do they need animation? Static models are considerably cheaper than rigged, animated ones.

Where AR budgets get wasted

Building for scenarios nobody uses. Large-space AR demos beautifully and goes unused, because people are in rooms. Design for the space users actually have.

Chasing perfect tracking. Tracking degrades in poor light regardless of engineering effort. Money is better spent on graceful degradation than on chasing an unattainable ideal.

Supporting very old devices. Each additional generation backwards costs testing time and constrains what you can build.

Ignoring session length. Holding a phone up is tiring. Content designed for long sessions will not be used that way, and building it is wasted.

What we bring to this

We build AR and XR commercially and we publish our own AR title — Down The Drone, a first-person AR shooter on iOS. Shipping our own AR product means we have absorbed the real costs: tracking quality across lighting conditions, thermal limits during sustained sessions, and the design consequences of room-scale play.

That informs how we scope AR work. We would rather tell you at estimate stage that a scenario will not survive contact with a real living room than discover it in testing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build an AR app?

AR apps typically cost 1.3x to 4x an equivalent conventional app, depending on type. A simple AR viewer is at the low end; an AR game with custom content or an industrial measurement app sits at the high end. 3D content creation is usually the largest single factor.

Why is AR development more expensive?

The AR frameworks themselves are free. The extra cost comes from 3D asset creation, testing in varied physical environments rather than a simulator, handling device differences such as LiDAR availability, and designing interactions that have little established convention.

Can existing 3D models be reused in an AR app?

Sometimes, but CAD models from manufacturing are usually far too detailed to render in real time and need significant optimisation before they can be used.

Does AR work on all iPhones?

Most recent iPhones support ARKit, but capability varies. Devices with LiDAR understand depth and occlusion far better, which often means building two behaviours if you want to support both well.

What is the most common AR budget mistake?

Designing for a scenario users do not have, most often large open spaces. Most AR is used in ordinary rooms, and content built for wide areas goes unused.
