Can You Mail Merge in Free Gmail? What Works Without Workspace

Gmail's built-in mail merge isn't available on a standard free Gmail account. Google's help page lists it for eligible Workspace plans only (Google Help: mail merge). Free Gmail users can still send personalised individual emails with Google's own Apps Script mail merge sample, a Google Sheets add-on, or a sending app, and Gmail's 500-a-day limit still applies.

Plans that include Gmail mail merge

According to Google, they are Workspace Individual, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Standard and Education Plus (source).

Free route 1: Google's Apps Script sample

Google publishes a mail merge sample for Gmail and Sheets (Google for Developers). You write a draft with placeholders like {{First name}}, copy the sample sheet, and run the script from the sheet's menu. It's free, but it's a bit technical.

Free route 2: Sheets add-ons

Several add-ons in the Google Workspace Marketplace offer free tiers with a daily cap. Check each one's current terms and the access it asks for.

Route 3: an iPhone app

Envora by KIDA Studios sends from your own Gmail or Workspace account on iPhone. You import a CSV, compose in text or HTML, preview and send in throttled batches. It uses a Google App Password (Google Help). It's free to download and comes with a 7-day free trial; after that, a one-time $39.99 Lifetime Unlock keeps it working (US App Store price).

Limits still apply

Every route sends through Gmail, so the personal-account limit of 500 a day described in Gmail Help still applies (source).
