Best Free Drone Games for iPhone
“Free” on the App Store means at least four different business models, and only one of them is actually free. Here is how to read a listing before you install, and what the free end of each drone game category looks like.
Four things “free” can mean
Before any recommendation, the useful skill is reading what free is paying for. Every free game is funded somehow, and the App Store tells you which model you are agreeing to if you know where to look.
Ad-supported. You watch video ads, often at the moment you die, which in a wave-based game is constantly. In-app purchases. The listing shows an in-app purchase list; free is the demo and progression is the product. Free trial into subscription. Increasingly common, and the least visible on the store page. Actually free. No ads, no in-app purchase list, nothing to buy.
The check takes ten seconds: on the App Store listing, look for an In-App Purchases section, and read the app privacy card for what data is collected. If both are empty, the game is not monetising you.
Free flight simulators
Most free FPV and flight simulators are either ad-supported or a limited version of a paid app, and it is usually worth paying for a good one if you are practising for real hardware — the free ones tend to restrict the aircraft or environments that make practice useful. This is the category where free is least likely to serve you well.
Free 3D combat games
The largest free category by a wide margin, and the most heavily monetised. Titles like Drone Shadow Strike, War Drone: 3D Shooting Games and Drone Shooting — War Games 3D are free to install, with the usual mobile-shooter economics of ads and upgrade purchases behind that.
