Reliability under load
The defining question. Dual capture runs two sensors, two hardware encoders, and a live preview simultaneously — close to the heaviest sustained load a phone camera system handles.
What to check:
- Does it survive a long take? Test with fifteen minutes before you rely on it for something important. Some apps stop silently when the device warms.
- What happens on interruption? A phone call or an app switch takes camera access away. A good recorder saves what it captured; a poor one loses the whole file.
- Does it warn about storage? Running out mid-take should be caught before you start, not discovered afterwards.
- Is the recording indicator unambiguous? Believing you are recording when you are not is the worst possible failure, and it happens more than it should.
Export format, and why it decides everything downstream
This is the most consequential specification and the least discussed.
Separate files per camera give you full control afterwards — change which angle dominates, resize the inset, produce different aspect ratios, or use one angle alone. More editing work, maximum flexibility.
A baked composite is finished and publishable immediately, and effectively unchangeable. The layout you picked before recording is what you ship.
Neither is better in the abstract. But choosing wrong is expensive: discovering you needed separate files after shooting a composite means reshooting.
Also check the container and codec. Standard H.264 or HEVC in MP4 or MOV imports everywhere. Anything unusual means conversion.
Storage control
Two streams is roughly double the data, so resolution choice matters more here than in single-camera work. A recorder that only offers maximum quality will fill a phone quickly.
Look for adjustable resolution and frame rate, and pick the lowest setting your delivery format actually needs. Recording 4K for something published at 1080p is doubling an already-doubled file for nothing.
Preview and monitoring
You cannot frame what you cannot see. A recorder should show both camera feeds live while recording, large enough to judge exposure and framing on each.
This matters especially for dual capture because the two cameras face opposite directions and are therefore almost always in different light. A well-exposed rear shot frequently means a silhouetted front shot, and the only way to catch that is looking at both previews before you start.
Audio handling
Both cameras share the phone's microphones, so you get one audio track. Check that the app requests microphone permission clearly and shows a level indicator — silent footage discovered after the fact is a common and completely avoidable loss.
If it supports an external microphone input, that is worth more than most video features.
Platform coverage
If your work touches a desktop, an iPhone-only recorder becomes a bottleneck. A tool spanning iPhone and Mac means one workflow for field and desk capture rather than two.
The honesty test
A recorder that acknowledges the constraints is more trustworthy than one that pretends they do not exist. Dual capture heats devices, uses double storage, and needs an A12 Bionic chip or newer — iPhone XS and later. An app quiet about all three has either not tested at length or would rather you not know.
