How we checked

We read the Wikipedia article on Maelstrom (1992), the project’s GitHub README, and the Steam and App Store pages on 29 October 2026. We did not try to run the original 1992 classic Mac OS build, so this article does not say whether old copies still launch.

What Maelstrom was

Per Wikipedia, Maelstrom is “a multidirectional shooter developed by Andrew Welch and released as shareware in November 1992 for Mac OS”, “an enhanced clone of Atari, Inc.’s 1979 Asteroids”, and its success “led Welch to start Ambrosia Software”. It won “Best New Macintosh Product” at the 1993 Shareware Industry Awards. The source went to Sam Lantinga, was released under the GPL in 1999, and its content under a Creative Commons license in 2010; “In May 2026, version 4.0 of Maelstrom was released for multiple platforms, including Steam and iOS.” (Wikipedia)

The GitHub README says this version “adds game controller support, mobile touch controls, and both cooperative and competitive multiplayer action”. It also lists a web version and a “kid mode”.
